The growth is in the experience.

I was coaching a client recently.

She was struggling. She was trying to figure it out. She felt stuck.

Then she got it. It was that same thing she struggles with over and over.

“Why does it ALWAYS come back to this?” she asked.

My answer to her – “The Growth is in the Experience.”

It can be so uncomfortable to come up against our struggles, but growth happens in the experiences, or tests, of life. You can study and learn and think you understand, but when the “rubber hits the road” you find out the difference between knowing and understanding.

Sometimes we think that once we learn a lesson, we should never have to revisit it again. This is like saying that once we know 1 + 1 = 2, we should never need to use that math again. It doesn’t work that way.

When we revisit our weaknesses over and over, it is like a test of faith. You think you understand it, and then your brain throws more at you. Once again, In the end 1 + 1 = what? 2. You figure it out…again.

“It’s a good thing to have all the props pulled out from under us occasionally. It gives us some sense of what is rock under our feet and what is sand.” – Madeleine L’engle

When we find the “sand under our feet”, like my client did, it gives us the opportunity to get back to creating the “rock we want to be standing on.”

We do this using our minds.

The “sand and rocks” are your thoughts. Your thoughts are what creates a firm foundation for your life.

If you find yourself revisiting the same lesson, and the same challenge over and over, don’t get discouraged. Remember, the GROWTH IS IN THE EXPERIENCE.

BE willing to grow.
